Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a global public health problem with a global prevalence of 2-3%. It is estimated that around 170 million people are currently infected (about 3% of the world’s population) and that 3 to 4 million more are infected each year. HCV is a common cause of chronic liver disease such as hepatitis, and is the leading cause of liver transplantation in developed countries and is mainly transmitted through the blood. The detection of anti-HCV in serum or plasma is used for screening a high-risk group and for the diagnosis of acute or chronic hepatitis C.
