Viral hepatitis is a serious global health problem affecting more than two billion people worldwide. The determination of antibodies to the surface antigen of HBV (anti-HBs) is used to assess a person’s immune status to infection with the virus or to aid in laboratory diagnosis. The test is performed to assess the need for vaccination (if anti-HBs are absent or below levels considered protective), after vaccination against HBV in high-risk groups (health workers, patients with chronic renal failure , people infected with HIV), or to monitor recovery from acute HBV infection. The presence of anti-HBs after acute infection usually indicates recovery and immunity to reinfection.
