The cortisol test is done on patients who may have defective adrenal glands. The level of cortisol normally rises and falls during the day. It peaks at its highest between 6 and 8 a.m. and gradually falls, reaching its lowest point around midnight. When the cortisol level is measured in a blood sample is usually taken at 8 a.m. and again at 4 p.m. It should be noted that normal values can be adjusted in people who have worked at night and slept during the day for long periods.
